Letter from Brad Swearingen, President Washington Area Community Center
Board
The Washington Area Community Center entity has been working for many years
to bring the Center from vision to reality. That vision started as a fitness
center, but grew to something much larger with many more services and functions.
Construction is on time and within budget. The facility with the exception of
the aquatic center will be completed in mid-August. A grand opening weekend that
will bring a wide variety of activities to the facility is being planned for
October 11-14.
Private donations and pledges have now reached $8.7 million. Funding for all but
$400,000 is in place to cover the cost of construction, first year expenses and
the estimated costs for furnishings and equipment. Fundraising continues for the
remaining $400,000.
This one-of-a-kind activity center is the result of the vision and cooperation
of five Washington entities and many, many volunteers. Its five co-operative
entities are: 1. Washington Area Community Center 2. City of Washington 3. Washington Community High School 4. Washington District Library 5. Washington Park District
This amazing facility will be a grand gathering place that will bring pride to
the people of Washington and will provide activities, entertainment and
enjoyment for the citizens of Washington and the surrounding communities.
The facility’s five main areas of recreation and enjoyment include: 1. the public library, 2. a performing arts center, 3. a sports center with wellness, fitness, gym and track, 4. an aquatics center, and 5. a banquet center and meeting rooms.
It is a state-of-the-art activity center for workshops and workouts, plays and
playschool, concerts and conversations, community forums and community card
games, banquets and birthday parties, learning and laughter, book clubs and
sports clubs, physical fitness and physical therapy, and much, much more.
In recognition of the co-operative effort to make this facility a reality and
the need to clearly market its wide variety of services, a new logo for the
facility has been developed.

This logo captures the spirit of the family orientation of the facility,
symbolizes the many activities that are available for all ages, memorializes the
entities that believed in its vision, and recognizes the great city in which the
facility resides. As we celebrate the opening of this amazing facility, as we
congratulate each other for this tremendous accomplishment, as we tell our
friends and neighbors to “come join us” at FIVE POINTS WASHINGTON … it should
make us all proud to be a part of this history.
Congratulations to all the donors, volunteers, dreamers and the co-operating
entities who have all worked so hard to make this vision reality! It’s time to
celebrate what has been accomplished!
