How much will my children learn in one session of lessons?

Learning depends on your child. All children learn and grow at different rates. We give plenty of pool time during classes for your child to improve his/her skills however we recommend families become members and utilize the pool for practice as swimming is a physical skill. Swimming can also be great fun when shared with your family!

Why is my child at the same level repeatedly?

Children may be in the level 3-4 times before completing the skill requirements and progressing to the next level. The levels are not designed for children to pass through quickly. Have patience with your child’s progress and try not to compare one child with another- each child will learn and improve at their own pace. If you feel your child needs one on one instruction to further them to the next level, consider private lessons.

Why do you use flotation devices in the preschool classes?

Flotation devices are recommended to increase the time that children can participate in the water. By using the guided discovery method of teaching we allow children to explore the water on their own under the supervision of the instructor. It also helps to gain confidence, independence and keep their bodies horizontal instead of vertical in the water.

Why do the children in class sometimes sit on the pool edge between their turns in the water?

This is done as a safety consideration to ensure the well-being of your child. It gives them a time to rest between skills and gives them the understanding of taking turns in the water.

What should I do if my child is crying?

It is not unusual for first time participants to become overwhelmed with the lesson experience or for the child to become upset upon initial separation from the parents. Our instructors are trained to deal with this kind of situation. The best thing you can do for your child is to leave your child in the caring hands of the instructor and exit the pool area. The instructors are trained to work with your child. If the situation worsens, the instructor will contact the parent. We may suggest a parent/tot class for the child.

Is there anything I can do to help my child learn to swim?

YES! Encourage your child. Work with your child at home and during family swim times (check our program guide or visit our website at www.fivepointswashington.org for a schedule)

If I have a question, who should I speak with?

If your question is regarding your child’s skills, your instructor is a great resource. Please only speak with instructors before or after class so they may concentrate on the lessons. If you have questions beyond the swim lessons please contact the Aquatics Department at ext. 24.
