Press Release

September 26, 2007

We are pleased to announce the official grand opening festivities for Five Points Washington at 360 N Wilmor Road on October 12 – 14

Friday afternoon Mayor Gary Manier and the City Council, Board members from the high school, the library, park district, and WACC (Washington Area Community Center) will officiate at the ribbon cutting which will begin at 1 PM.  The WCHS band will perform followed by a brief ceremony.  Refreshments will follow.  From 9 AM until 5 PM Friday the library will host a fine art show which will continue on both Saturday and Sunday.  Friday after the ribbon cutting until 4 PM the senior center will be open to the public for card and board games as well as bingo.

Saturday includes a full day of activities for the whole family.  In the morning the staff will host free fitness class samplers…30 minutes of fun exercise that will provide a sampling of the classes that will be offered at the fitness center.  Free-throw and 3-point contests will be on-going in the gym from 8 AM - Noon.  At 11AM the library will host Heather Bacus for story-telling.  Belle from Beauty and the Beast will meet and greet young and not-so-young.  The afternoon will include face painting, open gym play, Fun on the Run’s Pervis the Plane attraction, and balloon creations by Doug Smith.  There will be exhibitions by area businesses in the banquet center that will provide a variety of ideas for special occasions such as wedding or anniversary receptions or an extraordinary birthday celebration.  The day will close with an extra special night of fun…”Laugh it Up Comedy and Music Night” with opening act Tom Ryan from Los Angeles followed by Michael and Amy from New York.  Mr. Ryan has appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman, Comedy Central, Showtime and NBC's Late Night Friday.  He has been the opening act for such names as Jerry Seinfeld, Ray Romano, Howie Mandel and Dennis Miller. Michael and Amy have creatively transformed the widely popular dueling pianos entertainment concept by capturing its best elements then mixing in their own premium blend of family-friendly outrageous comedy.  Tickets for this event are $20 and can be purchased on-line at FivePointsWashington.org or by visiting the WACC office at 104 S. Elm, Washington or the facility at 360 N Wilmor Rd.

The activities begin again Sunday afternoon at Five Points Washington.  The library will again host the art show from 2 to 6:30 PM.  Julie Larson, the Dinette Set cartoonist, will be available in the banquet center during a community ice cream social from 2 until 3 PM.  Sunday evening the Peoria Symphony will provide a musical tribute with all of the American favorites: from Leonard Bernstein to Aaron Copland, from Leroy Anderson to John Philip Sousa, from Duke Ellington to Glenn Miller and back again with Tommy Dorsey and Benny Goodman.  There will be a special choral group led by WCHS choral director Lara Reem and assembled from talent in Washington and surrounding communities in a moving rendition of Shenandoah, and in stirring patriotic classics alongside the orchestra.  Bring your cheering talents and a virtual mitt for a symphonic baseball game, and get ready to “Sing, Sing, Sing”!  The concert will begin at 6:30 PM.
